The Northwest Detroit Youth Coalition (NWDYC) is a non-profit collaboration of Youth Agencies formed in 1996 to enhance opportunities for youth residing in the Northwest Detroit Area. The following barriers were identified preventing youth participation in organized sports and extra-curricular programs:

  • Poor communication of youth opportunities available
  • Lack of transportation
  • Few trained leaders
  • Lack of financial support
  • No community plan or vision to identify needs and how to connect youth and parents with resources needed

A steering committee of 18 members and an advisory committee with representation from area agencies serving youth and local businesses were formed to address these barriers.

Northwest Detroit Youth Coalition is organized through a volunteer community-based Board of Directors.  The Board oversees, coordinates, monitors, and assures accountability of The Board has youth advocates including teachers, criminal justice personnel, social workers, retired principals and company executives, and clergy who have devoted their lives to the positive growth and development of Detroit youth. In addition to volunteering their time once a month to meet, NWDYC board members offer their time and expertise visiting programs they sponsor to volunteer, donating, seeking new grant opportunities and using their networks to develop new partnerships.
