O’Hair Park Summer Program
The O’Hair Park Summer Program is a month-long daily program oriented for youth who live in the area. In its third year, the program will offer basketball, volleyball, cheer leading, other activities, small group discussions, speakers, field trips, service projects and snacks/water to serve the youth ages 10 to 16 in the neighborhood from 12:00 – 4:00pm. Monday through Friday.
The camp begins with all youth playing basketball, doing drills, etc. They are supervised by a credentialed trainer and staff. The youth are then divided into sub groups based on their personal interest in a sport/activity for approximately 1.5 hours.
After the activities, staff engage the youth in thinking and talking about important matters about growing up. Encouraging leadership of the 75 youth participants, NWDYC staff will challenge them to lead discussions on meaningful topics of their choice. Topics include but are not limited to the following: education, crime and the criminal justice system, conflict resolution, leadership and service, brainstorming and implementing solutions, faith, family/support systems, and abstinence.
NWDYC staff and volunteers, who include former high school/college athletes and coaches, will facilitate and participate in all activities.
